An introduction to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection from The Art Gallery of New South Wales
The selection of works has been organised around seven themes which depart significantly from earlier divisions of Aboriginal art into geographical regions, or different media, or chronological sequence. Most of the seven sections encompass a range of works from different regions, time periods and media designed to show conceptual links, the persistence of Aboriginality, and the adaptability of Aboriginal artists to new ideas and materials. With the current proliferation of Aboriginal art-making, its amazing diversity and the mobility of artists today, it was felt that the themes chosen make accessible the Gallery’s collection in a contemporary context.
