The Grand Lodge of this organisation met for the first time on 20th June 1908, when the first three Lodges were consecrated. Here is a full and detailed history, recording and reviewing those beginnings and the subsequent remarkable development of our Order—which since 1958 has carried the subtitle of The Order of Women Freemasons.
Throughout our one hundred years of history as an Order, there have been many momentous occasions, events and achievements. This book recounts these, often in the words of the time, and uses many illustrations from the past, most of which first appeared in our journal The Gavel. This material has hitherto been unavailable to readers and researchers.
The United Grand Lodge of England, in their statement of February 1999, has formally acknowledged the existence of female Freemasons—how pleased and proud our Founders would have been to know it! This volume makes an unprecedented and invaluable contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the history and development of the Order of Women Freemasons.
A great deal of work and care has been undertaken over several years by the Grand Registrar and Librarian of the Order, R.W. Bro. Ann Pilcher-Dayton, P.J.G.W., Grand Registrar, G.M’s.G.S., which has now culminated in the publication of this book. I commend it not only to all members of our Order but also to Masonic historians and to the many readers interested in the social history of the last century.
