Description

This further collection of writings runs from 1939 to Teilhard’s death in 1955, following on chronologically from Human Energy. Many of the themes are of course already familiar, but in this volume they are often presented from a new angle, with a new vigour, in a more “digested” form which suddenly illumines points that had previously remained obscure.

There is too a deepening sense of conviction. Teilhard writes that he feels he has succeeded “in narrowing down more closely the ultimate essence of what envelops me, of what draws me along, of what I am.” And in an essay the year before his death: “I can say that I have found my bearings.”

The earlier gropings towards the truth have given way to an optimistic certainty in man’s potential through faith. And Teilhard returns repeatedly to one of his favourite themes: the notion of faith as spiritual energy, as a motor-force in the universe that far out-distances the nevertheless awe-inspiring potential of technological advance today.
